Day 4: Can I Question God?
7 DAYS OF GETTING TO KNOW GOD
DAY 4 OF 7 · Estimated time: 8–10 minutes
Your progress: 4 of 7 days
Can I Question God?
Ever had a question about God but felt like you weren't supposed to ask it?
Maybe you thought people would judge you.
Maybe you were afraid of sounding stupid.
Or maybe something you've heard about Christianity just doesn't make sense.
Here's something I want you to know.
Having questions doesn't mean you're doing something wrong.
And you don't have to pretend you understand something when you don't.
In today's reading, we're meeting someone who had questions for Jesus, too.
Let's check it out.
Today's Reading
John 3
Read the entire chapter.
If you have a physical Bible, I recommend using it. It's easier to focus without notifications and other distractions. If you don't have one nearby, no worries. Use the link below.
As you're reading, pay attention to what Nicodemus asks Jesus and how Jesus responds.
Let's Talk About It
All right, so you just read John 3.
At the beginning of the chapter, we meet a guy named Nicodemus.
Nicodemus was a Pharisee.
If you're wondering what that means, Pharisees were members of a Jewish religious movement known for taking God's law and religious traditions seriously.
Basically, Nicodemus knew a lot about religion.
But he still had questions.
So one night, he goes to talk to Jesus.
And Jesus tells him something pretty unexpected.
He says a person must be born again to see God's kingdom.
Nicodemus is confused.
And honestly, can you blame him?
How is somebody supposed to be born twice?
But Jesus isn't talking about being physically born again.
He's talking about receiving new life through God's Spirit.
Following Jesus isn't just about knowing religious information. It's about being changed from the inside out.
Then we get to one of the most well-known verses in the Bible.
John 3:16.
Jesus explains that God loved the world so much that He gave His Son so that whoever believes in Him can have eternal life.
Think about that.
According to Jesus, God's love is what motivated Him to offer salvation.
Not because people were perfect.
Not because they had everything figured out.
But because He loves them.
Now, here's something I don't want you to miss.
Nicodemus came to Jesus with questions.
And Jesus gave him answers that challenged what he understood.
So yes, you can ask questions about God.
But are you willing to consider an answer that might challenge what you already believe?
Because getting to know God isn't just about asking questions.
It's also about being willing to learn.
Think About It
What's one question about God or Jesus that you've been afraid to ask?
Maybe it's something you've wondered about for years.
Or maybe it's something you just read.
Whatever it is, don't feel like you have to pretend you already know the answer.
Today's Challenge
Write down one honest question you have about God.
That's it.
It can be about anything.
Then take one step toward exploring the answer.
Maybe that means reading more of the Bible.
Maybe it means talking to someone you trust who knows Scripture.
And remember, it's okay if you don't find the answer immediately.
Some questions take time.
If you're willing, try praying:
God, I've got questions, and I'm still trying to figure some things out. Help me understand what's true, and give me the courage to keep looking for answers.
Before You Go
Four days down!
Here's something I hope you're starting to realize.
You don't have to have all the answers to start getting to know God.
Keep asking questions.
And don't just take somebody else's word for it.
Find out what the Bible actually says.
